Today is my little nephew's birthday. 

Ok...so he is not so little anymore. 6 years have flown by so fast. He went from 21 inches tall to over 4 feet so fast. He says the most hilarious and thought provoking things. He is sweet and sensitive and I am so proud of this little guy. 

Today I want to spend the rest of this blog writing a letter to this little man.



Danny,

I sometimes tease you that I am going to put a book on your head to keep you from growing up. There is a real part of me that wants to freeze time and keep you a little boy forever. You give the best hugs and kisses but are quickly approaching the age where you are just a little too cool to.

Yet, even if I could stop time and keep you my sweet funny little boy, I wouldn't. You see every passing day and year I am amazed at the person you are becoming. You have such a sweet and sensitive spirit. You are a deep thinker and so smart it never ceases to amaze me. You are so hilarious and weird.

As you grow, my hope and prayer for you is that you will continue to keep those things. That your sweetness and sensitivity will make you a kind and respectful young man. That your deep thoughts and intelligence will turn into wisdom and understanding. I hope you always keep your sense of humor and never fear being different or odd but embrace the unique character that you are. 

More than anything though little boy, I pray that you will give your heart to Jesus, hook, line and sinker. That you will let Him lead you and guide you through your life. I pray that you will trust Him completely and live the life that He has for you. I pray that you will know you are created with a plan and purpose and that that purpose is to know and follow Jesus. May you know and understand the Holy Spirit as He draws you through your days. May everything you do be for His glory and my you never buy the lies that the enemy will shout over your life. 

I pray that you will be a Daniel who just like your name sake has courage and commitment. That you will devote yourself to Jesus despite what the culture says. I pray that you will be a leader and a testimony to the power of Christ. Dare to be a Daniel buddy, and know that there Lord will never leave you or forsake you.

I love you pal.

But Jesus love you more.

I love you to the moon and back, but He loved you with a cross. 

Give your life to Him and you will never regret a day you spend following Jesus.

This weekend, my little peanut Daniel broke his thumb. Now he gets to spend the next several weeks in a cast. Saturday morning I had gone to spend the day with him. He and his sister were playing contentedly in the play room and he come to me with a forlorn look on his little face. "It's not fair." He declared in his 5 year old sensibility. "What's not fair?" I asked. "I can't play like I want to because my arm broken." My heart hurt for him. He just wanted to be...normal again. reconnect

As I grow older and continue to seek after the Lord, I am amazed how I, how am much an extravert, crave stillness. I crave solitude. I crave silence. This weekend, I turned off much of the noise, put my phone on do not disturb and spent time in stillness and living a simpler form of life. It was lovely. It was necessary. On Saturday afternoon I hung in my hammock in my brothers back yard and read to my nephew from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. As I read, I was stricken by the imagery. It was beautiful and eloquent yet simple.  I crave simple, more than I ever realized. In disconnecting for much of the weekend, yes, I missed chatting with my friends, but that was all I missed.  As I reconnected today and stepped back into all the pressures of regular life, I couldn't help wishing I were in my hammock in the woods reading CS Lewis or LM Montgomery. whatever

This week has been ridiculously, unseasonably hot. I have spent way too much time complaining about and avoiding the heat. This morning as I was leading worship for church we sang the old stand by 10,000 Reasons. As we sang the first verse it struck me once again. The sun comes up it’s a new day dawning,  It’s time to sing your song again. Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me, Let me be singing when the evening comes. That word, whatever.  That’s a word that is said flippantly all the time but when you put it in the context that song is saying it in, it’s huge. Whatever. Not just a few things that may come into our days. WHATEVER may pass and WHATEVER lies before. After that I taught my Sunday school class a song. This song talks about following Jesus under any circumstance. There is a verse in it that really tugs at my heart.
